They have to wait to find out something, anything, and to worry, and, in Max’s case, to figure out how to earn a living at the same time as he maintains his independence. In Trastad–a merchant city located on three islands–Elske learns the Norther tongue, gradually relaxes in a new, more humane lifestyle, eventually discovering that men and women can enjoy each other’s private company in ways undreamed of by the hated Fruchtmen. I never got the chance to read this last book in the series.

This book was interesting enough to keep me reading into the wee hours of the night, eager to find out what would happen next. Maybe there was some sort of Nietzchean protocol going on here, wherein she who acts haughtiest wins.

A Novel of the Kingdom. Elske, the protagonist, is admirable and unique. I give two stars for the superb use of words and unique writing along with the world building. Who knows, perhaps it was intentional. Why would it happen that they were abandoned? I also liked Elske, but wished she were more human, and more emotional.
I wondered about the condittoreithe mercenary soldiers who followed their bold captains, some of whom eventually became great nobles, ruling over wide landscapes, and ruling well, too, some of them.
